| Families spend nights scared of their houses collapsing down on them as sand was used instead of cement to build houses in Jharkhand. These houses were built under the Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana (IAY), one of the many programmes of the Ministry of Rural Development in India. IAY deals with the housing issue and promises to provide shelter to the shelterless. A total of 18 houses were constructed under the scheme in Sahebganj District of Jharkhand in 2013. But within few months of construction, the walls started breaking and crumbling. The reason for this being the use of sand instead of quality cement during construction. As a result, families staying in these houses had to repair these broken walls themselves, using mud. These poor families are left helpless as they have to spend more and more on repairing their new houses. Through the video, Community Correspondent Shikha Pahadin , a member of the community highlights the rampant issue of corruption that led to the building of these houses and also calls for immediate repairs to be arranged for these houses. |
